Spring is one of the most fun and also one of the busiest times at the Evanston History Center.  This spring is no exception as we prepare for the 38th annual Mother’s Day House Walk on Sunday, May 12, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Evanston, and EHC’s programming will focus on this important anniversary! The House Walk is no exception; this year’s walk will celebrate 150 years of Evanston history and architecture!

In the 38 years since its inception, EHC’s Mother’s Day House Walk has embodied the best of history and architecture. This year, the House Walk will celebrate Evanston’s sesquicentennial by showcasing the broad range of architectural styles that are represented in the city. From an 1860s Italianate to an internationally recognized Prairie School house to an award-winning mid-century home, the houses on this year’s walk trace the path of history through a variety of architectural styles and time periods. Six spectacular private homes in an historic Evanston neighborhood will be on view, with each house open for interior viewing. You can purchase tickets on-line.

Other 150th anniversary programming includes the new exhibit Where Are We? Mapping Our Way Through Evanston History, highlighting dozens of historic maps from our collection.

The maps showcased in the exhibit provide clues about how Evanstonians have understood and mapped their community, and offer a view of the dramatic ways Evanston has changed over time. The exhibit includes a “Map Room” designed for individual exploration and examination of maps online, books in maps and other interactive features

Also, save the date, Saturday, July 27th, 1:00 – 4:00 for our annual Ice Cream Social.  This year we will feature a birthday cake in addition to Andy’s frozen custard!
